“The 16th Step To Overcoming: The Power of Repentance!”

In my journey of self-discovery, striving to overcome obesity, fulfilling the will of God and being purpose-driven, in the midst of it all, sometimes, I stumble and fall. With my best efforts, when I slip and fall short before The Glory of God, I feel horrible.  Actually, I’m straight up bummed out and saddened. The greatest sadness I feel when I fall is one of disappointment, not just in myself, but the feeling that God is angry and disappointed with me.  In a season of struggle and constantly failing, with my head hung low during prayer, I heard Him whisper to my heart, “Lift up your head my daughter, I’m not mad at you. I’m here to help you. Come to me you that are weary and I will give you rest.”

As soon as I heard those words, the spirit of heaviness lifted from me and I felt alive again.  Once I heard Him speak, I sobbed.  I recognized right at that moment I felt ashamed before Him and it affected how I felt, how I interacted with Him, the people around me and all I wanted to do was isolate myself.  I realize now, that’s not God. He’s not an accuser of the brethren and He doesn’t beat us up when we’re struggling and desiring to overcome but can’t. He’s gracious and kind to the weak and He doesn’t toss us away or throw in the towel because of our weaknesses. He died for the right to help us.

What I’ve come to learn is that God isn’t like people that once you make a mistake, you’re less valuable and tossed away and discounted. God is much more loving than we perceive Him to Be. He is the creator of all, He understands our struggles, He know’s our weaknesses and when we fall, He died to pick us back up and to give us a chance to start over.

The bible says,

Hebrews 4:14 (NLT)

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

The bible also say’s,

Proverbs 24:16 (KJV)

16 For a just man falls seven times, and rises up again

When our heart is right before God and we’re actually struggling but striving to change and fall, He extends His hands of mercy to help us back up. When I fall in my eating, I’m learning everyday, “be patient with yourself, be patient, for God is patient with you and He’s not mad at you. Repent, accept His forgiveness and work towards being better in His Grace, not your own Strength. He’ll help you.”

So for those of you struggling in any area, for those you battling with sin, for those of you that just can’t seem to pull things together to move forward but have a heart to want to do better, Christ is saying to you,

I’m not mad at you. Lift up your head, My Child, I died that you may have life and have it to the full. My grace is sufficient for you for my power works best in your weakness.  I am patient and kind, slow to anger and abounding in Love. I do not get angry as the world gets and I won’t abuse you. I understand you, I know how you were formed. I’ve seen your beginning and I see your end. I see your heart to change but I also see your chains and desire to better but can’t. All I ask is that you take the first step, Repent. There is freedom in your repentance. I formed you in your mother’s womb, you are no surprise to me. Be patient with yourself for I am patient with you. Come to me, speak to me about your struggles and ALLOW my blood to wash you clean. Lean on me to do better and when you fall, forgive yourself as I forgive you. My grace is always available to pick you back up. I love you with an endless love and I love you unconditionally. Receive my love, my forgiveness and rest in those things. My child, I will never leave you nor forsake you. Your struggle belongs to me and forgiveness belongs to you. RECEIVE IT AND BE FREE!”

When you and I fall, and we will, we have to just get back up and start over. When we fall, we have to repent, forgive ourselves and complete our repentance by being obedient. Christ is there with His loving arms opened to embrace and lift us up. There is power and grace to change and turn from sin when we repent.  Our repentance snatches the rights the enemy and gives it back to God.  There is peace in true repentance. There is joy and gladness in our repentance. Our repentance purifies our hearts and gives us a clean slate to start over. There is hope of a better tomorrow in repentance. Repentance is our God-given right in Christ, let’s receive it today, be empowered to change and find peace.
